The Show where business gets done

Thank you very much for considering the supporting the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Agricultural Society. Gillingham and Shaftesbury Agricultural Society has a vast heritage; the Gillingham Agricultural Society being founded in 1860 and the Shaftesbury Farms Club being founded just two years later in 1862. Eventually in 1930 an agreement was reached and the first Gillingham & Shaftesbury show was held. From then on, on even years the show was held in Gillingham and on odd years the show was held in Shaftesbury. In 1993 the society purchased 92 acres of land, which meant that the show now has a permanent home. 2024 will mark the 30th Anniversary of the show on Turnpike Showground.

The Show still claims to be the agricultural show of the three counties, with around 1200 members, over 1300 livestock entries, 500 trade stands, entertainment in two rings, and more tractors than several three-day shows. Next year the show will be held over the 14th and 15th August. It’s a great day out for both the agricultural trade and families alike. Last year the show was well attended, with 100’s more entries in our exhibiting categories. We saw around 24,000 people through our gates over Wednesday and Thursday in 2023. Our social media is a big part of our marketing strategy. In 2023 our “One week to show day” announcement on Facebook reached 162,700 which is around 30,000 more than our highest achieving post the year before. The announcement that livestock entries were closing had 812 reactions, 52 comments and 46 shares.

The Spring Countryside Show is our other annual show, and next year will be held on the 20th and 21st April. Spring Countryside Show 2024 will be the 3rd year since the shows inception. New for 2024 will be a garden demonstration tent, where we will be asking gardeners and produce growers to talk and about their specialist subjects, ready to get our visitors inspired about their gardens. The announcement that the show would be back for 2023 reached 214,546 people on Facebook and over 2000 people liked commented or shared it. Our post announcing the schedule the week of our show hit screens 114,500 times. Our social media reach the week of the show also improved in 2023, up by 3 times on the same week the year before. This year attendance at the show was up slightly on the previous year with the average person travelling 35 miles to our show. We look forward to seeing what we can achieve in 2024 with new attractions, a new focus and a new marketing strategy.
