What's On

Dorset Life Main Ring

Something exciting is galloping into this summer’s Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show – and it’s not your usual main ring attraction.

Returning on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th August, the show is introducing horseboarding for the very first time. If you’ve never seen it before, imagine a high-speed team effort between a horse, rider and mountainboarder, racing an obstacle course at speeds of up to 33mph. It’s fast, skilful, and just a little bit daring.

Originally developed in England in 2004, horseboarding has grown into an international sport. The mountainboarder is towed behind the horse using a quick-release line, weaving through gates where every second – and every move, counts. It’s all about precision, trust and teamwork, and it makes for a seriously thrilling watch.

Of course, the show hasn’t forgotten its roots. Alongside this new addition, you’ll still find all the much-loved rural traditions that make the event such a favourite. Expect everything from Shetland pony racing and terrier and ferret racing to the ever-popular family dog show, where your own four-legged companions can get involved.
